What are Cooperative Agreements?

The primary objective of Cooperative Agreements is the development of collaborative efforts between UF and international institutions. These agreements are broad declarations of the intent to promote exchange between the faculty and students of the two institutions as well as the exchange of academic and research information. More specific legal documents must be created in response to the specific activities generated by these agreements.

Proposing a Cooperative Agreement

The basic steps for proposing a cooperative agreement involve negotiating the terms of the agreement with both parties; filling out and submitting a pre-approved cooperative agreement; getting the approval of the Department Chair and College Dean, submitting the agreement and all accompanying documents to UFIC, UFIC and UF General Counsel verifying the legality of the agreement; and finally the signing of the agreement by both the dean of the International Center, on behalf of UF's president, and the cooperating institution. For complete instructions, please read the detailed directions.

For IFAS Faculty

1) Letter of Approval: UF/IFAS approval is required for cooperative agreements managed by IFAS personnel or departments. The letter of approval that must be on your units letterhead and signed by your Department Chair/ or center director and will also need "College Approval." This approval for UF/IFAS is facilitated through the UF/IFAS International Program office and the letter of approval is signed by Dr. David J.Sammons, Director, UF/IFAS International Programs. Once the letter of approval is signed by the appropriate department chair or center director, please forward it our office with the brief description of the potential program/collaborative activities as explained below.

2) Brief statement of activities: A key element of any cooperative agreement is the potential collaborative activities. Since the standard format of a Cooperative Agreement does not include specific information on the topic areas and types of activities that are anticipated through the cooperative agreement, you must provide UF/IFAS International Programs office a separate brief outline of your objectives, topics of interest, and types of potential activities such as exchanges, collaborative research, etc. This is often just a 1 page brief and has no standard format. This helps us better work with you to support key program efforts and to share information on your program, and is required to obtain the UF/IFAS approval.

Please send a copy of the agreement, the letter of approval and brief description to: Marti Dettman-Kruse, 2039 McCarty Hall, PO Box 110282. We would prefer to also receive this information electronically at ( martidk@ufl.edu )
