International Citizenship: Sport Management Practicum in Asia

The globalization in sport has rapidly occurred in last two decades. East Asian countries (e.g., Japan, China, and South Korea) have become heavy consumers of American sports and hosted several international sporting events due to their economic capability. However, Asian cultures or sport industries are quite different from those of America. An opportunity of working in an international sport event and traveling in Asia will be helpful for students majoring in sport management and other academic disciplines to gain different cultural and industrial experiences in Asia.

International Citizenship: Sport Management Practicum in Asia is a 3-credit hour course offering in Summer B (proposed). The course is limited to 15 students. The course is designed for undergraduate students of sport management students, but is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors. Graduate students will be responsible for additional research assignments that are due after the trip. The course in 2008 Summer B will be conducted in South Korea. The course comprises two components: before/after-trip lecture of the culture and sport of the host country and a 15-day trip including cultural tour and practicum at an international sport event/organization in the host country.

A student who successfully completes this course will be able to understand the culture and sport industry of Asia, apply the knowledge to Asian sport contexts, identify possible sport business in Asia countries, and develop the international career network.
