Methods and Materials in Health Education

HSC 4302 teaches students fundamental strategies for health education including conceptualizing health instruction, specifying instructional objectives, planning units and lessons, using various instructional methods and information technology, selecting and using instructional materials in print and digital formats, and evaluating the effectiveness of health instruction in multiple settings. The current course curriculum will be modified to enable students in obtaining cultural sensitivity, as part of required skills for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).

The Cultural Sensitivity Assessment Portfolio component will supplement the existing course curriculum. Students will identify a registered UF student organization under the Cultural Category, set up face-to-face contact to learn the 10 leading causes of death in that country/region, and identify major contributing factors necessary to successfully educate people, cultural barriers in conducting health education interventions, and culturally appropriate instructional materials. The groups will examine medical delivery systems in the United States and that country/region’s to determine the medical aspects and realities of planning effective health education interventions. The interview will be video-recorded by two project assistants. Students participating in the project will write a news release about factors to consider when planning a health education intervention for the country/region they studied.

With permission from the interviewees, the digital videos recorded during the interviews will be converted to streaming videos delivered online which will be provided to students in the current course, and in future courses, so students can use the groups’ experiences as models for recognizing cultural influences on program planning and delivery in Health Education.
