Scott Ritter - March 28, 2006
Speaker, Former Chief Weapons Inspector for the UN
Arrendondo Room, Reitz Union
7:00 p.m.
Scott Ritter’s speech will review his experiences when he served as Chief Weapons Inspector for the UN Special Commission in Iraq, where he was in charge of searching for weapons of mass destruction. Scott Ritter was the UN's top weapons inspector in Iraq until 1998, when he resigned claiming President Clinton was too easy on Saddam. Now he says the dictator doesn't seem to have weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and that trying to oust Saddam is "extremely dangerous.” He is a former major in the U.S. Marines, and served in the Office of Special Commission at the United Nations (UN), where he coordinated international efforts to implement United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions mandating the elimination of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Prior to serving in this capacity, Ritter provided expertise concerning information collection, management, and assessment issues in support of UN inspection activities inside Iraq.
