International Speakers Program
The Professor Robert Bradbury Lecture
The annual presentation of the Professor Robert Bradbury Lecture was held Thursday, March 22 at 5:30 p.m. Each year the lecture features a distinguished scholar in international economics. Professor Guillermo A. Calvo, Director of the Center for International Economics, and Distinguished Professor at the University of Maryland addressed the timely Latin American economic issue "The Dollarization Debate." Dr. Calvo has held tenured positions at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania. He was Senior Advisor in the Research Department of the IMF (1988-1994), and has advised several governments in Latin America and Europe.
Eighty faculty and students attended the lecture. Participants included faculty, graduate and undergraduate students from the Center for Latin American Studies and the Warrington College of Business Administration. The lecture provided up-to-date insights on Latin American economics and important career and research information to faculty and students from Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business Administration and the Center for Latin American Studies.
In addition to the Bradbury Lecture, Dr. Calvo presented an International and Applied Economics Seminar to twenty faculty and graduate students in the Department of Economics on Friday, March 23. The title of his presentation was "Capital Markets: Exchange Rate and Price Stickiness with Special Reference to the Dollarization Debate in Latin America." A luncheon and question and answer session followed the presentation providing an excellent opportunity for Ph.D. students to ask questions of a leading international economics researcher.
In addition to support provided by International Programs, the lecture and seminar also received support from the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), the Department of Economics and the Professor Robert Bradbury Lecture endowment.
