Permanent Resident Applicants
Foreign nationals who have submitted an application for permanent resident status to USCIS (Form I-485) will need advance permission to re-enter the U.S. from the USCIS before departing, unless the foreign national possesses H status and a corresponding valid H visa ( see Travel information for H beneficiaries ).
Applications for Advance Parole should includes the following documentation for each permanent resident applicant who is traveling abroad:
- Form I-131, Parts 1, 2, 3, and 7 (Check item “d” in Part 2 of the Form. In part 7, state “Adjustment Applicant” and check the box for “more than one trip.” No additional documentation is needed. Download Form I-131 from www.uscis.gov, click on “Immigration Forms .”
- 2 color photographs
- Check to USCIS for $305 (if a Form I-131 was not filed concurrently with the Form I-485)
- Copy of USCIS receipt for Form I-485 (if not filing concurrently with the Form I-485)
- Copy of biodata page from passport
- Applications made after submission of the Form I-485 must include a copy of the I-485 receipt, and are sent to the same address to which you sent the Form I-485 application packet.
Approval will be issued on a Form I-512 (Authorization for Parole or Conditional Entry of an Alien into the U.S.). Approval will be given for one year, and will be valid for multiple entries during the immigrant visa processing period.
The processing period for applications for Advance Parole is usually 2 to 4 months. If you have an emergency situation and must travel immediately, please contact the Faculty and Scholar Services Coordinator.
