Report

The Coca-Cola World Citizenship Program internship was a phenomenal experience.  I interned at World Vision International: Haïti in the Health/AIDS department.  I performed an extensive variety of tasks during my three months at World Vision for the HIV department, for IFPRI, and for an individual project.  The value of my internship experience is beyond measure, academically and professionally.  I will always consider my internship as the opportunity of a lifetime.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to participate in many aspects of HIV programming.  This included translation of an assortment of documents and the creation of a survey tool to assess HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.  I assisted in the planning and executing of the National Conference of Protestant Churches on HIV/AIDS.  I also played a major role in writing the World Vision Haïti National Strategic Plan for HIV/AIDS/STI.

I worked with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)/Cornell University/WV Operational Research in the Central Plateau.  I helped in translating the interview guides and pretesting the materials at mother’s clubs, food distribution points, and assembly posts in the Central Plateau.  In addition, I submitted a safe drinking water project proposal to the Brasserie e la Courrone, the local Coca-Cola Bottler for the Central Plateau, to improve the quality of drinking water and increase the economic capacity of families of severely malnourished children.

Working for World Vision Haïti has truly been an enriching experience.  I benefited from seeing how some of the programs work, interacted with target populations, and gained insight into the everyday realities of the people living where we worked.  Also, I was able to sharpen some professional skills by observing the planning process for the Protestant conference and operational research, as well as participating in qualitative and quantitative data collection methods.
