Dr. Meira Fields USAC Scholarship

University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) is pleased to announce the Dr. Meira Fields Scholarship which will provide scholarship funding to support students with declared STEM majors or minors. This scholarship will provide $500 to summer recipients and between $1000-$2500 to fall and spring recipients.

Scholarship Background

Born in Haifa, Israel in 1936, Dr. Fields studied Arts in high school. After graduating early, she spent a year at the Hebrew University studying science prior to entering the Israeli Air Force as part of her compulsory 2 years of national military service. After serving, Dr. Fields returned to Hebrew University where she received her Masters of Science degree in Biochemistry. She moved to England in 1961 where she completed her Ph.D. in Biochemistry.

Dr. Fields worked for the Canadian National Fisheries Research Board studying skate in St. John, New Brunswick and also in Saskatchewan where she did hospital‐based research.  She then moved back to Israel where she worked in research until 1973 when she received a World Health Organization (WHO) grant to continue her work with a team of English scientists. Dr. Fields also joined the Hebrew University Pathology department and in addition to her research was a senior lecturer in Anatomy, both in Jerusalem and Beersheba.

In the summer of 1982 Dr. Fields accepted a one year research position with the United States Department of Agriculture where she worked on a joint research program with scientists from Georgetown University. In 1984 she was invited back to the USDA, where she continued her earlier research. This work, which focused on copper in the diet, continued until her retirement at the end of 2000.

In honor of the late Dr. Meira Fields, this scholarship is intended to help STEM students develop their own vision of the greater world.


Recipients must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Participate on a USAC study abroad program
  • Have a declared STEM major or minor
  • Be a degree‐seeking student at the University of Florida
  • Meet the GPA requirement for their selected USAC program
  • Maintain full‐time status while abroad
    • 12 credits for a fall or spring semester
    • 3 credits for a summer term
  • Preference will be given to students that demonstrate financial need

All applicants must meet the above criteria and submit a complete copy of the application below to the UF International Center. Applications can be submitted in person at the Study Abroad Front Desk, located in the International Center at the Hub or via email to sas@ufic.ufl.edu.
